Supported a mobile operator in a major South-East Asian market to develop its 5G spectrum strategy and business plan
Project experience | Spectrum
The problem
- Analysys Mason was engaged by a challenger mobile operator in a major South-East Asian market to develop a 5G business strategy, including the optimal 5G spectrum approach and the corresponding implications for its business plan
The solution
- As part of the scope, we organised a workshop with the executive management to reach a common understanding on the current spectrum strategy and to define a set of possible 5G scenarios
- International case studies of challengers using next-gen technology to improve their market position were used to assess the estimated commercial upside from the various 5G scenarios
- The client’s current network capabilities and 4G/5G technology plans were used as the basis of defining 5G roll-out scenarios and the feasibility of 5G technical approaches (e.g. use of DSS technology)
- We then developed a business plan to quantify the financial impact between the defined spectrum scenarios which were used to provide recommendations on the optimal 5G approach
- Additional sensitivities (e.g. network sharing) were also evaluated and quantified to provide the client with additional options to consider

The result
- Our findings were presented to the board to obtain alignment on the client’s 5G strategy and key requirements to successfully support this
Analysys Mason supported a Southeast Asian network operator in developing its 5G spectrum strategy and business plan which allowed a comparative assessment of the financial impact across scenarios and allowed us to inform our client on the optimal approach and key risks as well as alternative options available
