"50G PON services are now commercially available on a limited basis, and dozens of operators are testing the technology alongside GPON, XGS PON and 25G PON, but the potential use cases are only really just starting to become clear."

50G passive optical network (PON) offers network operators a potential long-term upgrade path for fibre access. The technology comes in two versions: an asymmetric version offering 50Gbit/s downstream and 25Gbit/s upstream, and a less mature symmetric version offering 50Gbit/s in both directions.

A number of operators have announced trials for 50G PON and a few have announced planned deployments. Although, questions remain about whether users will need as much capacity as that offered by 50G PON, and if so, what services might it support and how the technology will be positioned.

Early examples of operator investment suggest two possible paths for 50G PON deployment; campus deployment and B2B market disruption. This article looks at the momentum behind 50G PON and how the technology might could be integrated into an operator’s network.
