5G networks can add significant value to a range of drone applications, such as remote monitoring, drone delivery and broadcasts. However, there remain challenges for operators in serving these applications, particularly relating to infrastructure readiness and the complexity of monetisation opportunities. Nevertheless, both regulatory progress and drone ecosystem innovation are expected to fuel wider commercial drone adoption over the next 5 years. Operators that want to maximise the 5G drone opportunity must prepare to solve the technical challenges that remain and should initiate trials and early partnerships.
