This edition of the Spectrum Newsletter for up to the end of December 2024 highlights the spectrum auction activity in four regions worldwide:

  • the Americas (Latin America (LATAM) and North America (NA))
  • Asia–Pacific (emerging Asia–Pacific (EMAP) and developed Asia–Pacific (DVAP))
  • Europe (Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Western Europe (WE))
  • the Middle East and Africa (MEA). 

Notable events in the period include the following.

  • Hong Kong. On 29 November 2024, Hong Kong’s Communications Authority (OFCA) completed its auction for spectrum in the upper 6GHz band for public mobile services, raising USD79.7 million. Three of the four national mobile operators each acquired 100MHz of spectrum in the band, including China Mobile, Hong Kong Telecommunications and SmarTone, each paying USD26.6 million.
  • Albania. On 25 November 2024, the Albanian regulator Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP) approved the use of the 3.5GHz band to One Albania and Vodafone Albania.
  • Ukraine. On 22 November 2024, the Ukrainian National Commission for the State Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum and the Provision of Postal Services (NCEC) announced it had completed its auction for licences in the 2.1GHz, 2.3GHz and 2.6GHz bands, raising USD69.2 million. Kyivstar, Lifecell and Vodafone Ukraine all acquired spectrum.
  • Georgia. On 22 October 2024, Georgia’s Communications Commission (ComCom) announced the results of its 5G spectrum auction. The country’s largest operator, MagtiCom, won all the spectrum available in the 700MHz, 800MHz, 2.6GHz and 3.4–3.7GHz bands. The operator paid USD39.2 million for the spectrum.
