"Fixed networks account for the largest share of many operators’ energy usage; operators are expecting to achieve big savings by turning off their copper infrastructure."

This report presents a range of unique network energy consumption benchmarks derived from a confidential survey of 27 fixed network operators undertaken by Analysys Mason in 2024. The benchmarks cannot be obtained by analysing publicly available data.

The survey results show that the amount of energy consumed by fixed network operators varies widely (even when normalised against numbers of customers or revenue). However, all fixed network operators surveyed anticipate cutting their energy usage over the next few years.

Topics analysed

  • Total energy consumption
  • Energy consumed by fixed networks as a percentage of the total (for convergence operators)
  • Change in energy consumption (historic and expected)
  • Energy consumption per customer and US dollar of revenue
  • Share of operators interested in large-scale, off-site energy generation
  • Direct versus indirect energy consumption
  • Expected savings from copper decommissioning
