"Mobile operators are expecting large reductions in their energy consumption; their strategies to achieve this, and their respective starting points, vary considerably."

This report presents a range of unique energy consumption benchmarks derived from a confidential survey of 37 mobile operators undertaken by Analysys Mason in 2024. The benchmarks cannot be obtained by analysing publicly available data.

The survey results show that the amount of energy consumed by mobile operators varies considerably (even when normalised against numbers of sites, numbers of customers or revenue). They also show that mobile operators’ progress in terms of reducing energy usage is divergent.

Topics analysed

  • Total energy consumption
  • Expected change in energy consumption
  • Energy consumption by network domain
  • Energy consumption per mobile site
  • Energy consumption per customer
  • Energy consumption per US dollar of revenue
  • Intended strategies for energy reduction
